Many people think heat pumps are a new idea, but they’re wrong! Most of us have 2 or 3 close to us in our homes already. They are in fridges, freezers and in the air conditioning in your car. They don’t create heat; they move it from one place to another.
Air source heat pumps harvest heat from the ambient air, using the same refrigeration technology, but on a bigger scale.
Although many days, especially in winter feel cold to us, there is still significant heat which can be collected and transferred, or pumped into our homes.
Whilst a new condensing oil boiler can be as high as 97% efficient, the last 3 % being lost up the chimney, air source heat pumps can offer efficiencies as high as 350% collecting more kwts of heat from the air than the kwts of electricity used to collect it, as well as having significantly lower carbon foot print.
Even in cold weather, their efficiency can still be as high as 200%
Already common in France and else ware on the continent, there relatively small size, and with their unit cost coming down as manufactures increase outputs they are becoming a viable alternative to oil or gas domestic heating.
Government grants are available to offset installation cost, currently £900, and grants may soon be available to offset electricity consumption to make pay back times even more attractive.
If you are seriously considering replacing Your existing boiler and would like to see a air source heat pump working we have a 9 Kilowatt Mitsubishi Ecodan unit heating a 3 bedroom house. Even in the snow, it worked as expected, which was no surprise as it’s rated to work efficiently down as low as -20 degress centigrade. For more information contact us
